Avis L. Harms

Avis L. Harms, 83, of rural Sioux City, formerly of rural Hinton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 612 Jennings Street, Sioux City, with the Rev. Kenny Hsu officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery at Brunsville, Iowa. Visitation will begin 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the services Monday at the church.

Avis Loretta Harms was born on Aug. 1, 1921, in Sioux City to William and Edith (Helfrich) Udell. She was raised in Sioux City and attended East High School. Following her education, Avis worked at various jobs in Sioux City as a nurse's aid, a cook and at Zenith Corporation.

On May 12, 1963, Avis and Harvey Harms were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. They lived in Sioux City for a few years before moving near Lawton, Iowa. Avis and Harvey would later move to an acreage near Hinton, where they spent the next 35 years. During those years, Avis and Harvey operated a restaurant in Lawton, and Avis later worked as a domestic housekeeper. The last seven years were spent living close to Avis' daughter, Barb in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Avis enjoyed gardening and canning, handiwork and crocheting as well as fishing with Harvey.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Mary Vogel and her husband, James, of Sioux City, Patricia Beckwith and her husband, Dan, of Burkburnett, Texas, Karen Berge and her husband, Melvin, of Omaha, Neb., Earl Stough and his wife, Brenda, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Barb Plendl and her husband, Walt, of rural Sioux City, Roy Stough and his wife, Judy, of Sioux Falls, Pauline Hiserote and her husband, Paul, of Sioux City and Gary Stough and his wife, Carol, of Sioux City; 36 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Thomas Udell and his wife, Mary, of Sioux City, Phyllis Drake of Ft. Collins, Colo., Junice LaFave of Wyoming, Mich., Gloria Goodwin and her husband, Clayton, of Arnolds Park, Iowa, and Gary Udell and his wife, Mary Jo, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant grandchildren, Donald May, Troy Schuchard, Tammy Vogel and Teresa Stough; a grandson, Cory Vogel; three infant brothers; an infant sister; a sister, Rosetta Hartin; and two brothers, David and William.

Pallbearers will be John, Earl and Russell Stough, Sid Vogel, Dana Beckwith, Jason Stough, Brad Johnson and Mike Ellison.
