Richard "Dick" Hentges of Le Mars died Thursday July 17, 2008 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars at the age of 86.
Richard was born June 3, 1922, in Le Mars, the son of Michael and Agnes (Foley) Hentges. He grew up in Le Mars and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School. He served his country in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II from Oct. 14, 1942, until his honorable discharge Feb. 8, 1946. Richard then moved to California and worked for Lockheed for several years until he and his brother Harold "Mike" started a company they called Valley Flood Light Service. The two of them operated this company for many years until they sold the business in 1975. At that time Richard stayed on with the company and worked with them until 1985 when he retired and moved to Le Mars. In Le Mars he helped out at Hentges Oil for several years until his health declined. Richard had been residing at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars for the past six years.
Richard was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was a member of the American Legion, Wasmer Post 241 in Le Mars.
In his younger years his favorite pastime was fishing with his buddies.
He is survived by three sisters, Marjorie Schmid of Merrill, Lois Armendariz of Sun Valley, Calif., and Mary Hentges of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; a brother Earl "Shorty" Hentges of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Helen Haverkamp; and two brothers: Harold "Mike" Hentges and Linus Hentges in childhood.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors provided by the American Legion, Wasmer Post 241.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time at the church on Monday morning.
The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is handling arrangements.
