HINTON, Iowa -- James D. "Jim" Young, 74, of Hinton died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Larkin Northside Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael T. Larkin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post of Hinton. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Jim was born Jan. 21, 1929, in Sioux City, the son of Elmer and Anna (Woolworth) Young. He was raised in Hinton and had lived in Hinton most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

He married Donna K. Hodgins on Dec. 31, 1959, in South Sioux City. He worked for the railroad from 1946 to 1949. He then was employed by Sioux Tools. He was part-owner and operator of the Hwy 75 Cafe for 25 years. He had also worked for Dyna-Tech, Prince Manufacturing and Wilson Trailer.

He was a member of American Legion Casper Post 477 of Hinton and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of Hinton; two sons and their wives, Edward and Patty Young of Iowa City, Iowa, and Terry and Mary Jo Young of Haverhill, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Faith, Ben, Heather, Adam, Erica, Jason and Jacob Young; two sisters, Ida Mae Butler of Bakersfield, Calif., and Lois Smith of Palo Alto, Calif.; two nieces; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Barry "Lynn" Young.

Pallbearers will be Shortly Schindel, Elmer Muecke, Duane Spies, Cecil Lang, Delbert Johns and Arnie Binneboese. Honorary pallbearers will be Faith, Ben, Heather, Adam, Erica, Jason and Jacob Young and Mike Raiford.
