Arval R. Jurgensen, 94, of Akron, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. The Rev. Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday with the family present after 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the church. The Carlsen Funeral Home -- Schroeder Chapel in Akron is in charge of arrangements.

Arval R. Jurgensen, 94, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 04, 2008 at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. Reverend Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2008, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at the church. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron is in charge of arrangements.

Arval Raymond Jurgensen was born July 18, 1913 near Akron, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Anna (Martsfield) Jurgensen. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron on June 19, 1927. He attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1931.

He was united in marriage to Edna Osterthun on January 20, 1934 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. The couple farmed near Akron from 1934 to 1975. During that time, Arval began selling insurance for his father-in-law and also worked the A.S.C. office in Le Mars. He also clerked sales for many businesses in the area. In 1975, Arval and Edna moved to Akron. Arval continued to sell insurance until his retirement on July 1, 1982. Following his retirement, Arval worked as a caretaker for the Riverside Cemetery in Akron. In June of 2003, Arval became a resident of the Akron Care Center.

Arval was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, having held several church offices. He was also a member of the Akron Lion’s Club and a former board member for the Akron Care Center. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Arval had a passion for band music, polka music, and playing the trumpet. He and Edna enjoyed going to dances. He also enjoyed playing pinochle and throwing horseshoes. He also liked playing baseball and softball. While living at the care center, he was active in the Bell Choir. He enjoyed his trip with the bell choir to Denver. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of over 74 years, Edna of Akron; son: Marlin Jurgensen and his wife Donna of Alcester, SD; daughter: Joyce Witt and her husband Bob of Rock Rapids, IA; brother: Orlan Jurgenson of Mesa, AZ; 2 sisters: Ellen Tabbert and her husband Bob of Harrisburg, SD, and Janiece Lawrence of Sioux Falls, SD; 5 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: LaVina Cramlett; brother: Lowell Jurgensen; and great-granddaughter: Kelsey Ellen Witt.
