John "Jack" Scharff, 64, of Jacksonville, N.C., and formerly of Remsen, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at Jacksonville, N.C.
John "Jack" Scharff was born Aug. 12, 1942, in Le Mars, the son of John L. and Edeltrud (Ahmann) Scharff. Jack was raised in Remsen and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in 1960. He then attended the University of Iowa from which he graduated in 1965. He married Effie Deerhake in 1964.
Jack was a writer and a traveler. He loved nature and the outdoors.
Survivors include one son, Nate Scharff and his wife Joan of San Diego, Calif.; two grandsons, Colin Scharff and Jon Garrett Scharff both of San Diego, Calif.; his mother, Edeltrud Stoffel of Bettendorf; three brothers, Peter Scharff and his wife Kathleen of Remsen, Joseph Scharff and his wife Dona of Sugar Grove, Ill., and Daniel Stoffel of Morrow, Ohio; and two sisters, Mary and her husband Robert McInnis of Bettendorf, and Anne Scharff of Port Byron, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his father John L. Scharff and his stepfather, John Stoffel.
Memorial services were at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen.
The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen was in charge of arrangements.
