Vivien Meyer, 93, of Arnolds Park, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.

Vivien Schlesser Meyer was born March 25, 1914, at Struble, the daughter of Nick and Mary Flaherty Schlesser. She attended rural school and graduated from Le Mars High School in 1932. She taught at a country school near her home in Struble.

She was married to George F. Meyer in 1937 at Le Mars. To this union were born two daughters, Betty A. Haight and Dorothy D. Sloma. They moved to the Iowa Lakes area in 1950 where they opened The Trading Post. In 1960 they moved to a lakeside acreage in Arnolds Park.

Vivien, as an resident of Rosewood Manor in Estherville, was an active part of that community and developed many friendships over the past three years.

Vivien was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford and the Rosary Altar Society. Her roots were in the farm and she maintained a lifelong active interest in farm management. She was a vociferous reader of literature and poetry, enjoyed her home and garden and the wildlife that always surrounded her at the lake. But most of all, she enjoyed visits from family and friends -- hospitality was her ministry.

Vivien is survived by her two daughters, Betty A. Haight and her husband, Raymond, of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Dorothy D. Sloma and her husband, Greg, of Elkhorn, Neb.; two grandchildren, Meghan Sloma of Arnolds Park and Brian Sloma of Pasadena, Calif.; and her sister, Betty Pochop of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her husband George; her parents and her sister, Roseen Puhl.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, March 13, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford, with Msgr. Kenneth Seinfried presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Le Mars, at 3 p.m.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening, March , at St. Joseph's Church in Milford, beginning at 5 p.m, with the family present, followed by a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 6 p.m.

The Turner Funeral Home of Spirit Lake is in charge of arrangements.
