Alma A. Mayer, 83, of Le Mars died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, following a brief illness.

The former Alma Anna Walker was born Feb. 15, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of Wellington D. and Olga (Hansen) Walker. She grew up in Sioux City and following high school attended N.B.T., where she received her degree in business administration. Alma married Bernard J. Roddy on Sept. 29, 1941, at North Platte, Neb.. Following their marriage the couple lived in Le Mars. Bernard Roddy died on Sept. 25, 1969.

On Dec. 18, 1971, Alma married Norbert Mayer. They also lived their entire married lives in Le Mars. For many years Alma enjoyed working with her brother Matt Walker and Walker Excavating Company of Le Mars as their bookkeeper. Her second husband Norbert died on Nov. 2, 1997.

Alma was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Eagles Club Auxiliary in Le Mars.

She enjoyed doing crafts, crocheting, oil painting, and flea markets in Fort Dodge. She also enjoyed Card Club, afternoon coffees and spoiling her grandchildren.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Jim and Marian Roddy of Waldorf, Md.; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Jerry Reiter of Pocahontas; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Matt and Lois Walker of Le Mars; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands, Bernard Roddy and Norbert Mayer; a brother Mickey Walker; and two sisters: Lucille Parsons and Betty Mitchell.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday morning at St. James Church.

The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting with arrangements.
