LE MARS, Iowa -- Ramonda S. Athens, 67, beloved wife and devoted mother of Le Mars, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars following a lengthy struggle with diabetes.

Memorial services will be will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. George's Episcopal Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Vicar Karen Wacome officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be after 4 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Ramonda Suzanne Brouillette was born in Le Mars on Oct. 17, 1936, the daughter of Frenchy and Vida (Atwood) Brouillette. She was raised in Le Mars and attended St. Joseph's Grade School. She graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1955. She attended Westmar College until her marriage to Marion "Sonny" Athens on July 20, 1956, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars.

She worked at her family's florist/greenhouse, Atwood the Florist. The couple then moved to San Francisco Bay area, where she was employed by the Pacific Bell Telephone Co. After their return to Le Mars, she was employed at Sacred Heart Hospital in the business office. In 1967, they moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where she was employed for nine years at Trinity Regional Hospital. They then returned to Le Mars and she began her 20 years of employment with Westmar University as the assistant to the Education Department and Career Planning and Placement office. She retired after the college closed in 1997. In 1999, she was employed by the Westmar Alumni and Friends Association, which she was devoted to.

She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church. At the church, she was active in Sunday School, the church Women's Guild and served as their chairperson for many years. She was then treasurer of the church for 12 years and was senior warden for six years. She enjoyed being the resident church decorator for more than 40 years.

She was active in the Plymouth County Historical Museum. She was on the original board when the museum started at the airport. She served as its secretary until the family moved to Fort Dodge and upon their return. She became active again when her health permitted. She was a member of the Westmar Women's Club, Westmar Auxiliary, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and then St. George's Preschool board of directors. She enjoyed her family, traveling, reading and flower arranging.

She is survived by her husband; four sons, Brian of Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., Brad and his wife, Cindy, of Le Mars, Eric of Le Mars, and Michael and his wife, Jenni, of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, Ian, Lea, Abby, Ben, Andru, Halle, Cody, Connor, Claudia and Carter; a brother and his wife, Richard and Nina Brouillette of Wheatland, Mo.; a sister and her husband, Rosalie and Albert Lade of Campbell, Calif.; an uncle, Raymond Atwood of Le Mars; 11 nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Roger and Betty Athens of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and a brother-in-law, Larry Athens.

Pallbearers will be Curt Ross, John Boyd, Jim Oswald, Scott Regen, Dan Wells and Dr. Wayne Marty.
