On June 14, 1969, Darleen and Glendon Peterson were united in marriage at the Open Bible Church in Swea City. The couple made their home in Le Mars where Darleen taught second grade in the Le Mars Community School District. In 1971 she took a break from teaching to raise their two sons. In 1983, Darleen began teaching Chapter 1 Mathematics at Remsen-Union Elementary School. After teaching there for 17 years, she retired in 2000.
