Howard Dobbins, 88, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at his residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Sara Malone officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Dobbins was born March 8, 1914, the son of George and Elizabeth (Bentz) Single. He was raised in Merrill and Remsen, Iowa. He graduated in 1933 from Merrill High School.

He worked for the Burlington Railroad and A & P Grocers in Sioux City and Le Mars before moving to Merrifield, Minn., in 1955. He worked for the Northwest Paper Company in Brainerd, Minn., from April 28, 1958, until his retirement on May 1, 1976.

He married Dorothy Albena Dennler on June 21, 1943. She died Nov. 21, 1967. He married Gladys Williams on May 10, 1968. She died Jan. 10, 1992. He returned in Iowa in October 1999.

He was active in the Grange while living in Minnesota, and participated in a senior softball league in Brainerd. He enjoyed fishing, wildlife, gardening, woodworking and baseball, especially the New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins. He will be remembered for the kindness he showed to his friends and family.

Survivors include two nieces and their families, Susan and Mark Leonard, Casey and Sam of Merrill, Peggy and Allan Smith, Nate and Janora of rural Merrill; and a sister-in-law, Blanche Dennler of rural Merrill.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Robert C. Dennler.
