John "Jack" Smith

John C. "Jack" Smith, 74, Akron, died Wednesday (Feb. 25, 1987) in the Akron City Convalescent Care Center after a long illness.

Services were held at 10:30 Saturday in the Wesley United Methodist church in Akron. Rev. Peter Peterson officiated. Gary Tucker, vocalist sang "Peach in the Valley" and "How Great Thou Art", accompanied by Pam Stowe, organist. Burial was in Riverside cemetery under direction of the Schroeder funeral home in Akron.

Military graveside rites were conducted by Hoschler Post 186, American Legion of Akron.

Pallbearers were Darrell Boetger, Norbert Isert, Floyd Wilcox, Calvin Robertson, Elmer Anderson and James Hawks.

Mrs. Smith was born Feb 12, 1913 at Akron, Iowa to Frank and Elvera Sorensen Smith in Westfield township, rural Akron. He attended rural schools near Akron. He married Irene F. Bellwood March 27, 1943 in South Sioux City, Neb. The couple farmed southeast of Akron until 1956 when they moved to Akron. He worked for various businesses in Akron prior to his retirement in 1975. Mrs. Smith died in July 1982.

He was a veteran of World War II and participated in the invasion of Normandy. He was a member and past commander of Hoschler Post 186, American Legion in Akron, and a member of Wesley United Methodist church, Akron.

Survivors include a son, Joe of St. Albans, West Virginia; his mother, Elvera Smith of Akron; two brothers, Virgil of Akron and Ward of O'Neil, Neb.; two sister, Mrs. Ella Johnson of Akron and Mrs. Hope Harbeck of Sioux city; two grandsons, Kyle and Brian Smith of St. Albans.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his father, Frank Smith; his wife, Irene; and two brother, Harry and Robert Smith.
