Helen Harms

Helen Harms, 85, of Le Mars, died Monday Dec. 24, 2007, at Floyd Valley Hospital.

The former Helen Iona Andersen was born Jan. 1, 1922 on a farm north of Le Mars, the daughter of Ole D. and Charlotte (Kloster) Andersen. She graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1941 and then received her teaching degree from Westmar College in Le Mars. For the next several years, Helen taught rural school near Le Mars. She married Maurice Harms on Feb. 9, 1952 at Jackson, Minn. Following their marriage the couple owned and operated Harms Trucking for many years until her husband's death on Jan. 4, 2000.

Helen was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.

She loved her family, especially all of her grandchildren, enjoyed playing cards, bowling and many road trips, but she did not like cleaning bullheads, although she did a wonderful job of preparing the meal. She was an excellent cook.

Helen is survived by her children: Beverlyn Baker of Greeley, Colo., Joanne Harms, Kenneth Harms and Patty Hill and her husband Dave, all of Le Mars, Edd Harms and his wife Mary Kay of Wichita, Kan., Elaine Grosenheider and her husband Bob and Merlin Huls and his wife Sue, all of Le Mars, two daughters-in-law: Marlys Harms and Patricia Harms, both of Le Mars; 31 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; her siblings: Russell Andersen and his wife Marie of Paullina, Ronald Andersen of Glendale, Ariz., Bob Andersen and his wife Darlene of Sioux City, Florence Grosenheider, and Estella Herman and her husband Willard, all of Le Mars, and Richard and Ginger Andersen of Burnsville, Minn.; a brother-in-law Gordon Criswell and his wife Shirley of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Maurice; six children: Jerome, Alfred, Arnie, Don, Lois (Harms) Hagert and Arlis Harms; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marlene Criswell and Hazel Johnson; two brothers-in-law: Virgil Johnson and Bill Grosenheider; and a sister-in-law Geraldine Andersen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday Dec. 28, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Thursday at St. James Church in Le Mars, where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the Mass Friday morning.

The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
