House fire claims Akron council¬man
By Marcene Heeren
A house fire has claimed the life of an Akron city councilman.
Barry "Arch" Small, 42, was discovered dead in his smoke-filled home on Thursday morning. The fire was contained to the interior of the house and was not discovered until someone checked on Small's where¬abouts after he failed to report for work.
The fire was reported at 8:49 a.m. The Akron Fire Department, Plymouth County Sheriff Department, and Akron police responded to the fire at 551 Main St.
It was a tough task for the firemen who struggled through the thick black smoke to extinguish the fire. Even more difficult was knowing that they were searching for one of their own. Small had served as an Akron volunteer fireman for 10 years.
State Fire Marshal David Schipper investigated at the scene Thursday afternoon. He determined that the fire was caused from faulty electrical wiring in the basement ceiling.
The fire burned up through the floor to the main level of the house. An autopsy revealed that Small died from smoke inhalation, according to a press release issued by the Plymouth County sheriff's office.
Small, a lifelong Akron resident, was elected to the city council in November of 1998. He represented Akron on the county E-911 commission and was Ak¬ron's alternate representative on the county Solid Waste Agency board.
He was employed as a motor grader operator for the Plymouth County Secondary Road Department. The son of Kenneth and Evelyn Small, Akron, he was also a trustee at the First Baptist Church in Akron.
The body was taken to Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron where services are pending.
