Darlene Fischer

Darlene Fischer, 83, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Darlene Ina Kehrberg was born Jan. 22, 1923, on the family farm in Plymouth Township, rural Plymouth County, to Herbert and Nellie (Donlin) Kehrberg. She was baptized and confirmed at the Merrill Methodist Church. She was an active member of the church youth group, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for years. She attended country school at Plymouth Township #4 and later graduated from Merrill High School in 1940. Following graduation she assisted in caring for her aging grandfather.

Darlene was united in marriage to Donald W. Fischer on Feb. 25, 1944, at the Merrill United Methodist Church. Darlene and Don lived on the Fischer family farm in Stanton Township. Darlene became a member of the Merrill Stanton E.U.B. Church where she was active in the W.S.C.S. and taught Sunday school. She was also involved with the Plymouth County Farm Bureau women's organization, holding various offices.

The Fischer family moved to Le Mars after 20 years of farming. They became members of First United Methodist Church where Darlene served on various committees, taught Sunday school and was a member of the U.M.W. She worked for the church for a few years, Bomgaars Supply for six years, The Abbey of Le Mars for three years, and later worked for 11 years as the food service director for Le Mars Community Schools, retiring in 1988. While working for the school, Darlene was named an honorary member of the FFA. She was a member of the Mother's Study Club and the Sunshine Club, serving as treasurer for several years.

Darlene enjoyed watching sports, especially if her family was participating. She loved to sew, read, and do crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Don of Le Mars; six children: Thomas Fischer and his wife, Vicki of Le Mars, Steven Fischer and his wife, Gloria of Le Mars, Stuart Fischer and his wife, Yati of Le Mars, Elizabeth (Betty) Schenzel and her husband, Brad of Aurora, Colo., Cynthia (Cindy) Keller and her husband, Gerry of Mason City, and Cheryl Fischer of Le Mars; 10 grandchildren: Tammy Thoms and her husband Scott, William Fischer and his wife Karen, Abbie Schenzel, Joshua Fischer, Nathan Fischer, Philip Fischer, Geofrey Fischer, David Fischer, Hana Fischer and Christopher Keller; five great-grandchildren: Preston, Meranda, Victor, Tyler, and Kerstin; three step-grandchildren: Dustin, Jeremiah, and Kelsie; and a great-great-grandson, Braydon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, one in infancy and Herbert "Bud" Kehrberg; and three sisters, Ethel Tschampel, Irene Hermann, and a sister in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars with the Revs. Jason Larson and Mike Janes officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the family present after 6 p.m. Friday evening to greet friends, followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Pallbearers will be Bill Fischer, Joshua Fischer, Geofrey Fischer, David Fischer, Nathan Fischer, and Philip Fischer. Honorary pallbearers will be Tammy Thoms, Abbie Schenzel, Hana Fischer, Christopher Keller, Preston Fischer, Meranda Fischer, Victor Fischer, Tyler Schiefen, Kerstin Thoms, Jeremiah Thoms, Dustin Thoms, Kelsie Anthony, and Braydon Beelner.
