IRETON, Iowa -- Irene C. Cornish, 94, of Ireton died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. William Kallestad officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home, Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Irene C. Borchers was born Jan. 9, 1910, on the family farm near Akron, Iowa to John F. and Katherine (Reemts) Borchers. Irene was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston Township. She attended country school in Preston Township.

Irene was united in marriage to Lucian Cornish on Aug. 29, 1931. Irene and Lucian moved to California in the late 1930s and returned back to Northwest Iowa in 1943 to a farm near Ireton. The couple farmed near Ireton until 1973. She had made her home at Hillcrest since 1982.

She was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. Irene enjoyed gardening and playing bingo. While Irene was a resident at the home, she enjoyed participating in group activities and volunteering when she could.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Donna Rae Cornish of Ireton; a daughter-in-law, Christine Cornish, of Madison, Wis.; five grandchildren, Greg Cornish and Doris of Akron, Bruce Cornish and Phyvanh of Sioux Falls, S.D., Barry Cornish of Craig, Iowa, Matthew Cornish and his wife, Debbie, of Madison and Suzette Cornish-Broennimann and her husband, James, of Milwaukee, Wis.; nine great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Minnie Borchers, of Akron; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John F. and Katherine Borchers; her husband, Lucian Cornish in 1984; a son, Darrell Cornish in 1990; a grandson, Curt Cornish in 1974; and two sisters, Amanda Fisher and Esther Heeren.

Pallbearers will be Greg Cornish, Barry Cornish, Bruce Cornish, Matt Cornish, Suzette Cornish-Broennimann, Jessica Cornish and Justin Cornish.
