AKRON, Iowa -- Lyle Frank Jacobs, 85, of Akron died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Morningside Manor in Alcester, S.D.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Lyle Frank Jacobs was born June 20, 1917, in Union County, S.D., the son of Franz and Myrtle (Halvorsen) Jacobs. On March 1, 1924, the family moved to Akron. He attended school in Akron, graduating from high school in 1936. He later graduated from Madison School of Banking in Madison, Wis.

He married Florence Anderson in 1938 at her home in Union County. In December 1942, Mr. Jacobs was called to the U.S. Army, serving in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged Jan. 1, 1946. Mr. Jacobs was employed at the Akron Municipal Light Plant operating the diesel engines and later was city clerk. He was employed as a parts man and salesman for Adams Implement. In November 1952, he became bookkeeper at First National Bank of Akron, and ascended to president and chairman of the board. In 1981, he sold his controlling interest, retiring in 1984.

Mr. Jacobs was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving as an usher and on the church council. He was member of the Akron Lions, the commercial club, American Legion Post 186, Freedom Lodge 434 A.F. & A.M., Eastern Star, Sioux City Consistory, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, Akron School Board, Akron City Council and treasurer of the hospital board and Akron Golf Club. In his free time, he enjoyed wood working, spending time in his shop and on the golf course. In March 1998, he entered Alcester Home due to Alzheimer's.

Survivors include his wife, Florence of Akron; a son, Terry Jacobs and his wife, Susan of Edina, Minn.; a daughter, Julie Jacobs of Seattle, Wash.; and two grandchildren, Jon Jacobs and Thomas Jacobs and his wife, Kelly, all of Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Milo, and his wife, Maude.
