LE MARS, Iowa -- Luella Baack, 88, of Milford, Iowa, formerly of the Le Mars area, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Lake Regional Health Care in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James J. Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Luella Baack was born July 10, 1914, on a farm near Le Mars, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Mairose) Heissel. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars. Following her education, she worked at various restaurants in Le Mars.

On Sept. 19, 1940, she and Orville Baack were united in marriage at Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill, Iowa. The couple moved to Milford to assist Orville's parents in the restaurant business. After Orville's military service, they moved to Merrill and later to Le Mars in 1958. In 1969, the couple moved to the Heissel family farm southwest of Le Mars. Orville passed away on July 25, 1971. She remained on the farm until moving to Floyd Valley Apartments in Le Mars. She was employed with Pamida from 1971 to 1984. In March 1997, she suffered a stroke and moved to Lakeside Lutheran Nursing Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She moved to Milford Nursing Center in October 2000 to be closer to her son and his wife, Ron and Jean.

She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards and crocheting. Most of all, she enjoyed the time she spent with her family, especially visiting the Okoboji area.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son and his wife, Ron and Jean of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a granddaughter, Brandee of Las Vegas, Nev.; a grandson, Brian of Boulder, Colo.; two sisters, Olivia Muir of St. Louis, Mo., and Mary Lihudis of Le Mars; two brothers and their wives, Francis and Joan Heissel of Le Mars, and Cyril and Jan Heissel of Storm Lake, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Delores Heissel of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Singer; and a brother, William.
