REMSEN, Iowa -- Elaine Homan, 92, of Remsen died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220. Visitation will be after 2 p .m. Wednesday, with a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Guild and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Elaine was born May 8, 1912, in Craig, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Rose (Wenner) Homan. In 1916, Elaine moved with her family from Craig to Remsen. In 1917, she entered St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen, where she received all her early education except for 1923 to 1924, when she attended St. Mary's School at Fond du Lac, Wis. Following her graduation from St. Mary's High School at Remsen in 1929, she attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa for four quarters and then began teaching at a rural school in Henry Township in Plymouth County. After five years of rural school teaching, interspersed with college attendance, Elaine received a bachelor of arts degree in English in 1936 from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. She then taught at Lincoln School in Cedar Falls for the next five years and spent one year with the Council Bluffs schools.

In September of 1942, Elaine entered the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps Officer Candidate School at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in November, 1942. Her 10 years of service included two years, from 1944 to 1948, with the Military Intelligence Division in Frankfurt, Germany. Elaine left military service in 1952 with the rank of captain.

In September, 1953, Elaine enrolled in the Graduate School of Public Administration at the University of Denver. While attending the university, she accepted a position with the Legislative Council, Colorado General Assembly, where she did legislative research and established the legislative library. Elaine received her master of arts degree in public administration in March, 1955 and continued to work with the Colorado General Assembly in the field of higher education.

At the request of the Rev. Richard Ryan, president of Regis College, Denver, Colo., Elaine served as registrar at the college from 1967 to 1969 before returning to the Colorado General Assembly as Chief Sergeant of Arms of the House of Representatives. She continued in that position until retiring to Remsen in November of 1978. In her retirement, she remained very active in the county and state Republican affairs. She had been a resident of the Happy Siesta since August of 2003.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, the church Guild and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 of Remsen.

Survivors include a brother, Paul and his wife, Ethel of Remsen; two sisters-in-law, Armella Homan of Remsen and Kathleen Homan of Tarzana, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marian Frampton; and five brothers, Gordon, Gerald, Donald in infancy, Robert and Peter.

Pallbearers will be Mark, Dave, Louis, Philip, Peter and Jim Homan.
