MARCUS, Iowa---Ruth Bass, 83, of LeMars, Iowa, formerly of Marcus, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus with the Rev. Roger Henry officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery in LeMars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service conducted by the Rev. Gary Landness at 7 p.m., at the Earnest & Roethler Funeral Chapel in Marcus. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Bass was born Sept. 26, 1917, in LeMars, the daughter of Louis and Bertha (Klohs) Okerstrom. She graduated from LeMars High School in 1935 where she completed her Normal Training. She taught country school for seven years in Preston township, Plymouth County, Iowa, and the Merrill, Iowa, areas. During the first years of World War II, she worked for Gates Rubber Company in Denver. During the latter years of World War II, she relocated to Santa Monica, Calif., and worked for American Aviation in Los Angeles.
She married Laurence Bass on July 15, 1948, in Marcus. They lived in Marcus. She was a homemaker and active in the community and church work. He died April 27, 1978. She moved to LeMars in October 1996. She had been a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center for the past two years.
She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. She served on various church committees and circles and taught Sunday school for several years. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Women’s Club, Music Boosters and bridge clubs. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading and shopping. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in LeMars.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Kay and Steve Powell of LeMars, and Kim and Dale Carver of Storm Lake; four grandsons, Bret and Brad Powell, and Kevin and Keaton Carver; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Petry of LeMars; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Okerstrom.
