Lucille B. (Lehmann) Mattas, 91, of Grand Junction, Colo., and formerly of Merrill, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Mesa Manor Care Center in Grand Junction.

Lucille Barbara Mattas was born on July 5, 1913 in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob and Emma (Trometer) Lehmann. She graduated from Merrill High School in 1930 and then attended college. Lucille began her career as an educator teaching in area country schools and later earned a degree in special education.

On May 7, 1935, Lucille and Leslie Mattas were united in marriage in South Sioux City, Neb. Lucille continued her teaching career with the Le Mars Community School District. She retired after 35 years of educating students. Mr. Mattas died in 1980. Lucille moved to Grand Junction, Colo., in 1983 to be closer to her children.

Lucille was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill and had been active in the Lydia Circle. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, playing cards, traveling and visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include a son, Marlyn "Matt" Mattas and his wife Connie and two daughters, Melva Jean Fletcher and her husband, Dick, and Jeanette Engle, all of Grand Junction, Colo.; grandchildren Brad and Greg Mattas and Todd Fletcher of Grand Junction, Lesley Fletcher Brown of Strasburg, Colo., Keri Engle Suhr of Spokane, Wash., Kyley Engle of Seattle, Wash., and Kelly Engle of Grand Junction; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lenora Brown of Battle Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leslie; a grandson Mark Engle; and two brothers, Clarence and Harry Lehmann.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at St John Lutheran Church in Merrill., The Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church and will continue until service time. The family will be present at 12:30 p.m. to greet family and friends.

The Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
