Fred Borchers, 93, of Le Mars, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Fredrich Gerhard Borchers was born April 11, 1912, on the family farm in Preston Township, rural Plymouth County, the son of August and Freda (Martfeld) Borchers. He was baptized on May 12, 1912, and confirmed on April 10, 1927 by the Rev. J.D. Meyer at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston Township.

He attended country school in Preston Township. Fred was united in marriage to Regina Johnson on Sept. 9, 1937, at Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township by Reverend Bunge. Fred and Regina farmed and raised livestock in Preston Township for many years. They moved to their home in Le Mars on Aug. 16, 1967, where they have since resided.

After moving to Le Mars, Fred and Regina became members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He was also a member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau and enjoyed going on bus tours with the Good Neighbor Club.

Fred enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. He also enjoyed playing cards and visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Regina of Le Mars; three children, LeRoy and his wife, Pat Borchers of Le Mars, Ronald and his wife, Twyla Borchers of Akron, and Shirley and her husband, Merrill McNaughton of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Joan Borchers of Carrolton, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Borchers of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Freda (Martfeld) Borchers; three brothers, Edwin, August Jr. and Walter in infancy; two sisters, Clara Heeren and Alice Heeren; and a great-grandson, Kyle Utesch.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Thursday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Friday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Bradley Borchers, Bruce Borchers, Derek Borchers, Kory Borchers, Aaron McNaughton, and James McNaughton. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, Barb Vornbrock, Connie McDougall-Hoffman, Donna Zenk, Lorie Theisen, and Krista Crowl.
