Willie "Bill" E. Olson, 81, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Willie "Bill" Edward Olson was born Sept. 6, 1922, in Le Mars, the son of Ole Ben and Alvina (Rothbart) Olson. Willie was raised in Seney and attended country school in Seney. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army from November 1942 until his honorable discharge in October 1946. Willie was united in marriage to Arlene Plueger on June 17, 1949, at Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township, rural Le Mars..

Willie had worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 38 years, retiring in 1984. During his retirement years, Willie enjoyed gardening, flowers, and camping at Lake Shetek in Minnesota. Willie was known for his special horseradish and salsa recipes.

Willie was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he had served as an usher for Sunday services and funerals for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Arlene of Le Mars; a sister, Alma Willer of Le Mars; his mother-in-law, Minnie Plueger of Le Mars; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Schulz and her husband, Lester, of Le Mars and Eunice Olson of Council Bluffs; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Fred, Lawrence, Albert, and Calmer Olson; two sisters, Violet Heien and Margaret Olson; father-in-law, Fred Plueger; and a brother-in-law, Stan Plueger.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present after 6 p.m. Friday evening to greet friends, with a prayer service to follow at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be George Frerichs, Ted Madson, Danny Morton, Mike Stinton, Gary Kolker, and Gary Berkenpas.
