OYENS, Iowa – Mary Lydia Stoffel, 94, of Oyens died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Oyens, with the Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a Christian Mothers rosary at 4 p.m., a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. and a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mrs. Stoffel was born Dec. 25, 1903, in Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Clara (Le Febvre) Neubrand. She was raised in Mapleton and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School. She graduated from high school in LeMars and received her teaching certificate from Morningside College in Sioux City. She taught rural school in Plymouth County for several years.

She married Alex F. Stoffel on Aug. 18, 1931, in LeMars. The couple farmed near LeMars until 1944, when they moved to a farm near Oyens. They retired in 1968 and moved into Oyens. She entered Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, Iowa, in February 1997. He died July 8, 1998.

She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, where she was a sacristan, Christian Mothers Society, Catholic Daughters of American Court Santa Maria and Third Order of St. Francis. She had also been a 4-H leader.

Survivors include four daughters, Lois Stoffel of LeMars; Sister Joan Stoffel, O.S.F. of Sioux City; Mary and her husband, Richard Roder, of Remsen, and Margaret and her husband, Lloyd Roeder, of LeMars; two sons and their wives, Earl and Pat of Loveland, Colo., and Robert and Sharon of Honey Creek, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Olive Groetken and Clara Nemmers, both of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Robert Neubrand of Wichita, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Neubrand and Sister Marie Theresa, S.C.C., and Dorothy Owens; and two brothers, William J. and Stanley Neubrand.
