Lyle F. Heien, 77, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Lyle Fred Heien was born May 5, 1926, near Craig, the son of Otto and Elizabeth (Baack) Heien. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Lyle had attended country school in Grant Township. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. Following his discharge, Lyle returned to Plymouth County and farmed. Lyle was united in marriage to Shirley Baack on Nov. 12, 1954, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The couple farmed until 1984 when they moved to Le Mars.

Lyle was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a member of the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, gardening and fishing. His greatest passion in life was his family and farming.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Delmer Otten of Tea, S.D.; a son, Wayne Heien of Le Mars; a granddaughter, Kayleen Otten of Tea; two step-grandchildren, Danae and Dustin Otten of White, S.D.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Mary Heien and Kenneth and Inez Heien, all of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Judy Nelson and her husband Edward of Sioux City and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Shirley on April 17, 2002; two sisters, Elsie Zenk and Irene Brunken; a sister-in-law, Violet Heien; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Brunken.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars, with graveside military honors provided by the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post 724 of Brunsville. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present after 5:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.
