Alberta Niehus, 87, of Remsen, and formerly of Pipestone, Minn., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center at Remsen. Afte a decade of struggle with dementia and Alzheimer's disease, Alberta finally succumbed after a brief illness with bronchitis.

Alberta Niehus was born April 18, 1916, at rural Alton, the daughter of James and Kathryn (Arens) Kinney. She was raised in the Alton area and received her education at St. Mary's Academy in Alton, graduating in 1934. She then attended Western Union College at Le Mars, where she obtained her teacher's certificate. She then taught in the rural school system in the Alton and Remsen area.

On June 20, 1944, she married Everild Niehus at Remsen. They made their home near Kingsley, where they were engaged in farming. In 1957, they moved to Pipestone, Minn., where they rasied their family. Alberta and Everild moved into the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in November 1996. Everild died Aug. 28, 2002.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Wayne and Carmen of Concord, Calif., Bill and Allyson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dean and Annette of Eagan, Minn.; one daughter-in-law, Donna Niehus of Pipestone, Minn.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Magdalen Cheboski of Carroll; one brother, Ivo and his wife, Mary Kinney, of Bella Vista, Ark.; and one sister-in-law, Marian Kinney of Alton

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Don; four brothers, Joseph, Bernard, Robert and James Kinney, Jr.; and one sister, Viola Hansen.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Alton. Friends may call anytime after 3 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m., and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Casketbearers will be Brian, Lance and Cody Niehus, Jim and Dennis Kinney and Dale Murray.
