PROMINENT AKRON CITIZEN IS CALLED TO FINAL REWARD

J.H. Pollock Had Been Resident Here for Over a Half Century

J.H. Pollock, a prominent citizen of Portland Township and Akron for more than fifty years, passed away at the hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, last Thursday afternoon, March 26, 1936, at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 15 days. Mr. Pollock had been in poor health since last fall from bladder trouble and complications, and was taken to Iowa City on March 18 for treatment at the hospital and a possible operation; but his condition continued to grow worse and the operation could not be performed. Despite all that medical skill and expert care could avail, he gradually declined until the end came as a relief from suffering. His son, Arden Pollock, of Sioux City, and daughter, Mrs. L.W. Koch, of this city, were with him at the hospital.

Joseph Hugh Pollock, son of Robert and Nancy A. (Cantwell) Pollock, was born at Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio September 11, 1859. When ten years old, he came west with his parents to Grundy County, Missouri, where he grew to young manhood. In 1878 he located in Sac County, Iowa, and engaged in farming, and where on September 27, 1883, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Estella Rhea. This union was blessed with four children—three sons and one daughter — Arden, Rex, and the twins, Clyde and Clair. In February, 1884, Mr. and Mrs. Pollock came to Plymouth County and settled on a farm six and one-half miles northeast of Akron, in Portland Township, engaging in farming there until 1918, when they moved to Akron, and this, has since remained the family home.

While living in Portland Township, Mr. Pollock served a number of years, as Township clerk, and since 1928 has held the office of justice of the peace. He was always a staunch Republican in politics and took an active part in civic affairs. Mr. Pollock was a kind and loving husband and father; a good neighbor, always ready to help those in need or distress. A host of friends will sincerely miss and mourn this esteemed pioneer citizen. He was one of the oldest members of Freedom lodge, No. 434, A.F. & A.M., and a past master of the lodge, and also held membership for many years in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Mrs. Mary E. Pollock; one son and one daughter, Arden Pollock, of Sioux City, and Mrs. L.W. Koch, of Akron; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Armstrong, of Lake View, Iowa, and Mrs. Margaret Wise of Akron, and by thirteen grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Rex and Clyde Pollock; two brothers and one sister. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the community.

Funeral services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Koch on Monday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock, and at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.F. Moore. Hymns were sung by Mary and Eunice Burket. The pallbearers: A.N. Williams, F.F. McElhaney, Lewis F. Sprenger, W.W. Ross, Harry Hubbs and Chas. M. Allen.
