Death of a Pioneer
Henry Manz, one of the pioneer residents of Plymouth County, died at his home in Washington Township on Saturday night from inflammation of the bladder at the age f sixty years. He was one of the most exemplary citizens of the county, a man of the highest type of honesty and integrity and a man whose sense of fairness was ever alert to see that he did no wrong or no unfairness occurred in his daily walks. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church and the funeral was held on Monday from the Methodist church in Merrill.
He was born in Switzerland on November 17, 1840, and came to Iowa when a lad of thirteen and settled in Allamakee County, where he made his home until 1869. In that year with his sister, Mrs. Steffen, he came to Plymouth County and homesteaded in Washington Township and has resided in the county ever since. He resided at Melbourne a great many years.
He was united in marriage n Dec. 20, 1873, with Miss Margaret Corrothars and seven children were born to them and they with the sorrowing wife survive him. All the children were here to attend the funeral. His two brothers, John Manz of Ayeshire, Iowa, and Conrad Manz of Benton County were here during his sickness and attended the funeral.
The children are Andrew Manz of Bronson, Ia.; John Manz of Concord, Neb.; George Manz of Toronto, S.D.; Mrs. J. R. Thompson, residing in this county; Mrs. Will Lemke of Merrill, and Will and Florence who are at home.

Henry Manz was born in Marthales, Switzerland, on December 17, 1840, and came to America in 1854 settling in Jackson County.
In 1868 he came to Plymouth County taking a homestead two miles north of Merrill where he has since resided. On December 19, 1872, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Corrothers, of Manchester, Iowa, they being the first couple ever married in Merrill. Seven children were born to them Mrs. J. R. Thompson, of Le Mars, Andrew of Bronson, Iowa, Mrs. Will Lemke, Florence and Will, of Merrill, John Manz of Concord, Nebr., Geo. Manz, Toronto, S. D. All the children were at his bedside when he passed away.
He also leaves two brothers, John Manz, of Ayrshre, Iowa, and Conrad Manz, of Garrison, Iowa, a sister Mrs. Steffen of Le Mars and a brother-in-law, Chris Corrothers, of Delhi, who all came to attend the funeral.
The funeral services were conducted at Merrill on Monday by Rev. Lawson, of Correctionville, assisted by Rev. G. Gilbert, of Merrill, and the interment made in the Merrill cemetery.
The deceased was a member of the Free Methodist persuasion and was deeply imbued with religious conviction. He was upright and extremely conscientious and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.
