Thomas “Tom” Fischer, 72, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the Merrill United Methodist Church in Merrill. Reverend Merrill Muller will officiate. Burial with military honors conducted by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 will be in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill. Visitation with the family present will be after 5:00 p.m. Monday, May 29, 2017, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Rexwinkel-Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.

Thomas Donald Fischer was born January 9, 1945 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Donald and Darlene (Kehrberg) Fischer. He attended country school in Stanton Township and later high school at Le Mars Community where he graduated in 1963.

Following his schooling, he enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard, where he served until 1973. While in the guard, he became a truck driver. He drove for area truckers for several years. He also farmed for a few years near Merrill.

He was united in marriage to Vicki Detloff on January 22, 1965 at the Seney United Methodist Church in Seney. Early on, they lived in several communities, working as a farm hand. They lived on a farm east of Merrill until 1982, when they moved to Le Mars.

He was a member of the Merrill United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars where he was active with the Legion Riders. He enjoyed riding with them and participating in area parades and poker runs. He also enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, camping, and golfing. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them in all of their activities.

Survivors include his wife of over 52 years, Vicki of Le Mars; a daughter: Tammy (Scott) Thoms of Le Mars; a son: Bill (Karen) Fischer of Le Mars; 8 grandchildren: Preston (Suzie) Fischer, Meranda (Mike) Hill, Victor Fischer (fiancé, Krysta Mohning), Kelsie (Drew) Zomermaand, Tyler Schiefen, Kerstin Thoms, Dustin (Steffy) Thoms, and Jeremiah (Christina) Thoms; 16 great grandchildren; his siblings: Steve (Beth) Fischer of Arkansas, Betty (Brad) Schenzel of Colorado, Cheryl Fischer of Le Mars, Cindy (Gerry) Keller of Mason City, IA, and Stuart (Yatty) Fischer of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Darlene Fischer.
