Lucille Winifred Brown, age 90, died surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, May 9, in Floyd Valley Hospital.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Adaville United Methodist Church, rural Merrill, Iowa. Reverend Merrill Muller will officiate. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Merrill. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Rexwinkel-Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.

Lucille was born to Fred and Mina Saupe on Sept. 22, 1926, in Sheldon, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Archer, Iowa, and attended country school near their home through 8th grade. She then attended Archer high school and graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1944. Lucille entered the Cadet nurses training program at Methodist Hospital in Sioux City. She earned a RN degree from the program in 1947 and worked in the pediatrics department at Methodist Hospital. She married Donald Brown on Feb. 26, 1949, in First Methodist Church in Sioux City. Lucille and Donald lived west of Merrill where they farmed for more than 50 years and raised four children.

Lucille was an active member of Adaville United Methodist Church, where she served in many different capacities. She also was a member of a local garden club for many years. One of Lucille’s greatest loves was growing beautiful flowers, including outstanding dahlias and roses. She also was a talented seamstress who for many years sewed clothing for her daughters. Later, she turned to quilting and stitched dozens of quilts for her family and church.

Lucille is survived by her four children, Marcia (John) Cota of Sioux City, Randy (Ann) Brown of Evergreen, Colorado, Karen (Randy) McMahon of Lakeville, Minnesota, and Keith (Shelly) Brown of Merrill; eight grandchildren, Doug (Jennifer) Brown, Erica (Steve) Combs, Maggie McMahon, Sean McMahon, Jessica (Nick) Trammel, Michaela Brown, Adam (Jennifer) Brown, and Andrew Brown; seven great-grandchildren; and three step grandchildren, Marne Iwand, Michael Cota and Thomas Cota; a sister Theora DeWaay of Bloomington, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Jo Brown of Le Mars; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Melvin and Marilyn Brown, of Rogue River, Oregon.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Donald on Aug. 11, 2003; her parents; three brothers-in-law Harold DeWaay, John Weber and Floyde Brown; and sister-in-law Doris Weber.
