Jerome “Jerry” Olson, 79, of Akron, Iowa passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Unity Point Health – St. Luke’s in Sioux City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. Pastor Susan Juilfs will officiate. Burial with military honors conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Jerome M. Olson was born July 1, 1936 in Canton, South Dakota, the son of Merle and Judith (Sandvik) Olson. He attended school in Canton and graduated from Canton High School in 1954. He attended the University of South Dakota. While enrolled in college, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his four years in the service, he was stationed in Japan, working in communications. In 1959, he was honorably discharged. He returned to college and graduated from University of South Dakota.

He was united in marriage to Hyla Jane Sherard on June 6, 1961 in Canton, SD. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Akron. Jerry was a teacher at Akron High School. During this time, he returned to the University of South Dakota where he earned his Master’s Degree in Administration. After teaching for a few years, he became the principal for Akron High School.

After taking the principal job and holding that for three years. Jerry got out of education and went to work for the State of Iowa as a juvenile court officer for Plymouth and Sioux counties. In 1996, he retired after 25 years of service. Following his retirement, he did some substitute teaching for Akron.

He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. He also served on the Akron city council. He and Hyla enjoyed attending shows and plays at the Akron Opera House. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Through the years, Jerry enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and being on his computer. But most of all, he loved the times spent with family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Hyla of Akron; a son: Doug (Kerrie) Olson of Akron and their children, Spencer, Natalie, and Kendra; a son: Dave (Angela) Olson of Akron; a sister: Patricia (Stan) Skattum of Keller, TX; a brother in law: Clifford (Carol) Sherard of Alexandria, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
