Darlene Oetken, 89, of Akron, Iowa passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. Pastor Susan Juilfs will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2015, with the family present after 5:30 p.m., and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Darlene Mae Oetken was born May 18, 1926 in Sioux County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Nora (Miller) Schneider. She attended country school and later high school in Hudson, South Dakota. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1945. Following high school, she worked as a bookkeeper for a dental office in Hawarden.

She was united in marriage to Earl Oetken on February 20, 1949. They farmed northeast of Akron for many years. Darlene was a homemaker for her family. In 1980, they moved to Akron.

She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron where she was active in WELCA and Martha Circle for many years. She was a 22 year member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 Auxiliary in Akron. Through the years, Darlene enjoyed cross stitching, gardening, and baking cookies for her family, especially her grandchildren. She and Earl also enjoyed traveling for many years. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Survivors include her husband of over 66 years, Earl of Akron; her children: Rick (Pam) Oetken of Akron, Roger (Dani) Oetken of Akron, Diane Oetken of Mankato, MN, Deb (Brad) Vreugdenhil of Akron, and Donna (Jim) Mahaney of Akron; 15 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; her siblings: Don Schneider of Hawarden, IA, Jeanette Kircher of Hawarden, IA, Jerry Schneider of Akron, Lois (Don) Van EgDom of Sioux Center, IA, and Wendell (Virlene) Schneider of Akron; a special friend: Donna Funfsinn of Good Thunder, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister in infancy; a sister: Carolyn Marie Schneider; 2 granddaughters: Rachael Oetken and Lisa Oetken; and her in laws: Arlo Kircher and Mineva Schneider.
