Virginia Lodene Whitaker was born March 7, 1934 in Akron, Iowa to Basil and Sybil (McCorkell) Whitaker. Her mother passed away when Vorginia was a young child and she went to live with Jack and Caryl Siebens. After a few years, she was reunited with her other siblings and ½ brothers and sisters. Virginia attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1952. Virginia was united in marriage to Edmond "Buzz" Leekley on June 7, 1953 at the Plymouth Presbyterian Church. The couple were blessed with four children: Mark, Marcia, Bonnie, and Beth.

Following their marriage, the couple moved to Odebolt, Iowa and returned back to a farm near Westfield. The couple farmed until moving to Akron in 2010. Virginia had worked as a bookkeeper for the local Ford dealer, but mostly helped Buzz on the farm and raised her family.

Virginia loved to bake and share her "goodies" with family and friends who stopped by to visit. Visitors were always welcomed with a cup of coffee and something to eat. She and Buzz enjoyed going to the bowling alley on Tuesday for coffee and visiting with friends. Her greatest joy in life was her family; she treasured the time with her grandchildren and later great grandchildren.

Virginia was a very active member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 Auxiliary for 27 years. She had served as President, Secretary, membership leader, and Past Plymouth County President.

Survivors include her children: Mark Leekley of Akron, Marcia Dewey of Westfield, IA, Bonnie Nason and her husband Larry of Sioux City, and Beth Wall and her husband Steve of North Sioux City, SD; 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; her siblings: Virgil ( Leatha) Whitaker of Ewing, MO, Madeline Trpksh of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Cliff (Betty) Whitaker of Plano, TX, Luverne Whitaker of Ewing, MO, Johnny (Linda) Whitaker of Ewing, MO, Delaine Whitaker of Ewing, MO, Betty (Kent) Thrasher of Leonard, MO, Mary McIntosch of Nashville, TN, Vicki Fischer of Nashville, TN and Danny (Vicki) Whitaker of Ewing, MO; her in-laws: Dale (Corrine) Leekley of Kingsley, IA; Ethel (Stan) Krosch of Kingsley, IA; Polly (Joe) Smith of St. Albans, WV; and Leola Muller of Sioux City, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
