Darwin Johnson, 84, of Akron, Iowa passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. Reverend Eric Alm and Reverend Dennis Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2016, with the family present after 5:00 p.m., and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Darwin Dean Johnson was born August 3, 1932 on a farm east of Akron, Iowa, the son of Harry C. and Emma Eva (Miller) Johnson. He attended country school near Akron and later high school in Akron. He graduated from Akron High School in 1950.

He was united in marriage to Darlene Schneider on February 25, 1950 in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Early on, they lived on a farm in Plymouth County, Iowa until moving to a farm in Union County, South Dakota where they have farmed for over 65 years.

He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron where he served on church council. He and Darlene were members of YoMaCo’s for many years. Darwin served on the Akron Coop Board for 14 years. He and Darlene enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arizona. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them in all of their activities.

Survivors include his wife of over 66 years, Darlene of Akron; their children: Gerald (Helen) Johnson of Plattsmouth, NE, Linda (Michael) Masek of Bennington, NE, and Lynn (Rhonda) Johnson of Akron; 16 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and 1 great great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by parents; his sister: Shirley Johnson; his brother: Gordon Johnson; and two grandchildren: Lisa Oetken and Tonia Murphy.
