Marietta Wilken, 71, of Akron, Iowa passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 23, 2015 at her home near Akron.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. Pastor Susan Juilfs will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015, with the family present after 5:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Marietta Myrtle Day was born July 3, 1943 in Hudson, South Dakota, the daughter of Marvin and Phyllis (Jurgensen) Day. She was raised near Alcester, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Nathaniel Lutheran Church in Alcester. Marietta attended school in Alcester and graduated from Alcester High School. Following high school, she attended beauty school in Sioux Falls. Following her training, she moved to Rapid City, South Dakota where she worked as a beautician.

After a couple of years, she returned to the Alcester area. She was united in marriage to Dennis Wilken on December 14, 1963 at Nathaniel Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm east of Akron. Early on, Marietta stayed home to raise her children. Later, she went to work for Terra Industries in Sioux City until going to work for Heyl Truck Lines in Akron. Later, she worked for M.C.I. in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa until retiring.

Marietta was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron where she served as the church organist for over 40 years. She was also active in Bible study and the ladies aide. She was a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 Auxiliary in Akron. For the past ten years, Marietta has been active in “Operation Write Home”, making cards and sending them to men and women serving overseas in the military. She also loved gardening, flowers, scrapbook crafts and making homemade cards, and her pets. She and Dennis have also enjoyed couples Card Club with lifelong close friends. But most of all, Marietta loved the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis of Akron; a daughter: Denice (Joe) Dvorak of Sioux Falls, SD, and their children: Evan and Ainsley; a son: Troy (Kristi) Wilken of Sioux City, IA, and their children: Ryan and Kayte; a son: John (Mary) Wilken of Akron and their children: Dennis, Taeji (fiancé, Tony Ridgway), and Alex; a son: Daniel (Carrie) Wilken of Akron and their children: Emmalee and Paige; a sister: Cecilia “Ceil” Nichols of Phoenix, AZ; a nephew: Todd (Christine) Davis of Kansas City, KS; 3 nieces: Meagan (John) Van Gelder of Omaha, NE, Tina Nichols of Peoria, AZ, and Tracie (Anthony) Foti of Gilbert, AZ; and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Marvin Day, Phyllis Day Stokes, and Dale Stokes; two brothers in infancy: Dwain and Kevin Day; two sisters: Cassandra Santi and Angela Day; and a brother in law: Tom Nichols.
