Franz was raised on the family farm and graduated from Wheatland High School with the Class of 1933. Following high school, Franz worked on the family farm until enlisting in the United States Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station serving as an instructor until his discharge from the Navy in August of 1945.
