Dan Blake, 87, of Akron, Iowa passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Pastor Steve Jewett from New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Dan Herschel Blake, Jr. was born November 7, 1926 on the family farm near Akron, Iowa, the son of Dan, Sr. and Hazel (Barrington) Blake. He attended country school near Akron. Following his schooling, he helped his family on the farm. Dan enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country during World War II. Following his honorable discharged, he returned to the Akron area. Dan began his career as an over the road truck driver. During this time, he met his future wife, Helen Chase. They were united in marriage on March 14, 1946 in Dakota City, Nebraska. Early on, they made their home in Wayne, Nebraska. Dan drove truck for Sherry Brothers Trucking out of Wayne. In 1957, they moved to Akron. Dan continued driving truck for local trucking companies in the area, including Mid America Dairymen until retiring in February of 1989. Dan and Helen continued to live in Akron following his retirement. Helen passed away August 4, 2010 in Sioux City. Dan was a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron for many years. He was an avid fisherman, having enjoyed going on several fishing trips to the Red River in Minnesota. He loved the outdoors and wildlife. He enjoyed watching the eagles in the Loess Hills south of Westfield. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his 3 children: Kathy (Paul) Bringman of Deming, NM, Orin (Connie) Blake of Akron, and Pat Haage of Akron; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 special nephews: Jack (Joyce) Blake of Sonoma, CA, and Jerry (Joan) Blake of Minneapolis, MN; several other nieces and nephews; and special friends: Bob and Gloria Fletcher of Akron.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; and 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
