Obituary for Alice File

Alice M. File, 79, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Garden Terrace Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence in Aurora, Colorado. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. Father Kevin Richter will celebrate Mass. A private burial service will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Friday.

Alice Marie File was born on September 28, 1934 in Sheldon, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Doris (O’Donnell) Pohlen. She attended Sheldon High School, graduating in 1952. Alice continued her education at Westmar College in Le Mars where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education in 1967.

Alice’s life was defined by learning and teaching, and thus her entire career was in education. She began teaching at Gehlen and continued her career at Remsen Union where she developed their Learning Disabilities program. Alice was a passionate, dedicated teacher who left a positive, enduring influence on many students.

On December 26, 1975, Alice and Gene File were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, Iowa. They made their home in Le Mars where they derived great gratification by being active in the community. They were also enthusiastic travelers, visiting nearly every region of America, as well as many European countries.

Alice was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. She also volunteered her time at the Postal Playhouse and Friends of the Le Mars Public Library and sat on the Board of the YMCA for many years. Alice enjoyed staying active. She was an avid golfer, energetic walker and a lover of mysteries and puzzles. She will be warmly remembered for her dynamic personality, as she was witty, full of life, and a wonderful friend to many.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Thomas McVicker and his wife Brenda, of Le Mars, Victoria McVicker and her partner Sarah Hatfield of Aurora, Colorado, Mark McVicker and his wife Donna of Brussels, Belgium and David McVicker, of Chicago, Illinois, four grandchildren, Aaron, Alex, Audra and Alexandra; brothers, George Pohlen and his wife Karroll of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Tom Pohlen and his wife Carolyn of Hutchinson, Minnesota; a brother-in-law, Ken File, of Cherokee, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; granddaughter, Elizabeth; and parents, Pete and Doris Pohlen.
