Obituary for Gene File

Le Mars, Iowa - Gene R. "Fuzz" File, 79, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Monday, April 23, 2012 at his home following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Dennis Martens will officiate. A private burial service will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Thursday.

Gene Robert File was born on December 18, 1932 in Rock Rapids, Iowa to Edward Riggi and Dorthea Marie (Boll) File. He attended school in Rock Rapids and graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1950. Following his education, Gene took a position with Illinois Central Gulf Railroad as a telegrapher and later as a clerk. Gene was active with the BRAC union and its leadership. Throughout the years he held various offices including president. Gene retired from the railroad on May 20, 1993.

On December 26, 1975 Gene and Alice M. (Pohlen) McVicker were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, Iowa. They made their home in Le Mars, Iowa. Gene was active in his children's lives and attended all of their events. He was heavily involved with Le Mars Little League where he coached, umpired and assisted the program in many ways. In 1979, he was honored with umpiring the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Gene was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, Iowa where he ushered and served many positions. He was also a longtime member of the Le Mars Kiwanis Club where he helped form the Aktion Club. Together Gene and Alice were community minded and volunteered a great deal of their time. He served as treasurer of Friends of the Library and worked with the Postal Playhouse. Gene was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce in 2007.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 36 years, Alice File of Le Mars, IA; children, Tom McVicker of Le Mars, IA, Victoria McVicker of Denver, CO, Mark McVicker of Brussels, Belgium and David McVicker of Chicago, IL and their families; a brother Ken File of Cherokee, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Bernice Johnson, Betty Dennis, Thelma Holthusen and Joyce Mantel; brothers Bill, Harold, Russell and Phillip.
