Obituary for Charlotte De Young
Charlotte M. De Young, 88, of Craig, Iowa passed away on Monday, March 23, 2015 at the Orange City Hospital. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Donna De Young will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Charlotte Maretta De Young was born on August 15, 1926 near Le Mars, Iowa, the only daughter of James and Etta (Van Steenwyk) Sorgdrager. She attended country school and later graduated from Le Mars High School.
On November 6, 1945, Charlotte and Joseph De Young were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Le Mars. In 1957, Joe and Charlotte, along with their eight children, traveled by train to Downey, California. Along with raising her children, Charlotte worked in a bottle factory and candled eggs. In late 1973, Joe and Charlotte returned to Craig, Iowa. It was in Craig that they opened the North Forty restaurant and was in business there until 1981. In 1983, Joe and Charlotte built The Golden Collar in Hospers, Iowa and he and Charlotte ran the business until they retired in 1986.
Charlotte was a member of the United Methodist Church in Le Mars. She enjoyed playing the piano.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Sandra (Steve) Phelps of Sioux City, IA; Richard (Donna) De Young of Craig, IA; Janet (Jay) Vlotho of Ireton, IA; Nancy (George) Smithson of Le Mars, IA; Myron (Heidi) De Young of Mesa, AZ; daughters-in-law Pam De Young of Spirit Lake, IA; Lori De Young of Craig, IA and Chris De Young of Sioux Falls, SD; 25 grandchildren, 48 great- grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Sorgdrager of Le Mars, IA; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph on January 21, 2015; sons, Joe, Milo and Vernon; and brothers, Kenneth (Margaret), James “Babe” (Joyce), Earl (Georgie) and Warren.
