LE MARS, Iowa - Andrew H. "Andy" Van Voorst, 74, of Le Mars died unexpectedly Sunday, June 15, 1997, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Lynn Potter officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mr. Van Voorst was born March 10, 1923, in Struble, Iowa, the son of Richard and Ella (Boone-Putastag) Van Voorst. He moved with his family to Sioux Center, Iowa, where he was raised and attended school.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Germany and was awarded the Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and two Bronze Battle Stars.
He married Darlene Beach on Oct. 24, 1944, in Brunsville, Iowa. The couple made their home in Le Mars, following his discharge from the military.
He was employed as a carpenter for Klinger Construction in Sioux City for many years. He semi-retired in the early 1980s, because of health problems.
He was a member of the Carpenter's Union 948 since 1957 and the Wasmer American Legion Post 241. He enjoyed raising Boston terriers, camping and working on the Kott Brothers farm near Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dennis and Cheryl of Le Mars; three daughters, Pat and her husband, Don Hughes, Evelyn Rodenburgh and Tom Weiner, and Linda and her husband, Rick Brown, all of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchidlren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters and a granddaughter, Stephanie Van Voorst.
Pallbearers will be Ken Bruscher, William "Pete" and Jim Sanow, Ron Hunter, Doug Singer and Francis "Bud" Gaffey.
