Melvin L. Underwood

Melvin LeRoy Underwood, 62, of Sioux City died Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at his residence.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Dick Walden officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Underwood was born July 14, 1938, in Homer, Neb., the son of Clifford and Minnie (Berg) Underwood. He attended school in Homer, South Sioux City and Bronson, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958.

He married Karen Lee Dalton on Feb. 15, 1982, in Las Vegas. He was employed as an over-the-road truck driver.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and stock cars.

Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Bobbiejo and her husband, William Geveshausen, Jackie and her husband, David Steele, Janet and her husband, John Kueny, and Barbara and her husband, Larry LeClair, all of Sioux City, Deb and her husband, Scott Price of McCook Lake, S.D., and Cindy Barnes of Jefferson, S.D.; four sons, Jeff Underwood and his special friend, Natasha Gilmour of Jefferson, Gene Kappler and his wife, Marty of Akron, Iowa, Roger Kappler of Sioux City, and Neal Kappler of Westfield, Iowa; three sisters, Florence Riffey, Viola and her husband, Bert Carver, and Gloria "Jean" Barclay, all of Sioux City; three brothers, Norman of Sioux City, Winfred and his wife, Norma of South Sioux City, and Darrell and his wife, Roberta of Cherokee, Iowa; 33 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jay Heckt; and a great-grandson.
