Le Mars, Iowa – Vera H. Mammen, 97, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2010 at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Greg Gabriel will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present to greet friends from 5–7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church.

Vera Hermina Mammen was born on May 30, 1913 on the family farm in Preston Township, Plymouth County, Iowa to Robert and Meta (Pageler) Grosenheider. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Akron, Iowa and attended country school near her home. Vera and Carl W. “Chuck” Mammen were united in marriage on March 30, 1937. The couple farmed in Grant Township in Plymouth County for four years. They then moved to a farm in Stanton Township. In 1967 Chuck and Vera moved to Le Mars. They retired from farming in 1973. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Vera was active in Circle and assisted with the prayer chain until her health failed and she could no longer participate.

She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters Joanne North of Bonita Springs, Florida and Wanda Mammen of Le Mars, Iowa; one brother and his wife Robert and Violet Grosenheider of Le Mars, Iowa; a sister-in-law Bernice Grosenheider of Le Mars, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl “Chuck” Mammen on August 28, 2010; three sisters Elsie Oetken, Ann Jones and Josie Popken; a brother Fred Grosenheider; and two sons-in-law William Goetz and Charles North.
