Obituary for Carl Mammen

Le Mars, Iowa – Carl W. “Chuck” Mammen, 99, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 30, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present to greet friends from 3 – 5 p.m. Visitation will resume at 1:00 p.m. on Monday at the church.

Carl William Mammen was born on August 25, 1911 on a farm in Grant Township, Plymouth County, Iowa to Charles H. and Anne (Borchers) Mammen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township), rural Le Mars. He attended country school near his home.

Chuck and Vera Grosenheider were united in marriage on March 30, 1937. The couple farmed in Grant Township for four years. They then moved to a farm in Stanton Township, Plymouth County. In 1967 Chuck and Vera moved to Le Mars. Chuck continued to farm until his retirement in 1973.

Chuck was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He served for two terms on Church Council and ushered at funerals for over 30 years. Farming was more than an occupation to Chuck, it was his life. He enjoyed being outdoors with nature, his livestock and crops, and watching birds.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 73 years, Vera Mammen of Le Mars, IA; two daughters Joanne North of Bonita Springs, FL and Wanda Mammen of Le Mars, IA; five nieces and nephews: Lennice (Pete) Rohlfs, Donald (Gayla) Kruse, Bob (Barb) Doering, Mark (Barb) Doering, and Cheryl Doering.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Elmer Mammen; sisters Alice Kruse and Minnie Doering; a sister-in-law Irene Mammen; and brothers-in-law William Kruse and Marvin Doering; and a son-in-law Charles North
