July 21, 1919 - July 18, 2017

Lois (Mc Corkell) Nielsen, 97, of Akron, Iowa passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Brule Creek Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point, South Dakota. Reverend Steve Martens will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017 at Rexwinkel-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. The family will be present after 5:30 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the funeral home. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday the church.

Lois Rae Mc Corkell was born July 21, 1919 in Akron, Iowa, the youngest of 9 children born to Howard and Estella (Tucker) Mc Corkell. She was raised in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1937.

Rather than go to college, she married Melvin Nielsen on February 16, 1938 at Rosini Lutheran Church, rural Beresford, South Dakota, and got her degree at being a farmer’s wife and mother of 5 sons: Jerry, Merlin, Norman, Roger, and Loren. Lois and Melvin lived together on a farm in Union County, South Dakota for over 71 years until moving to Akron. Melvin passed away October 5, 2014 in Akron.

She was a member of Brule Creek Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point, South Dakota where she was active in the ladies aide for many years. Through the years, Lois enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and doing many crafts. Her favorite crafts were China painting and making many quilts.

Survivors include her sons: Merlin Nielsen (special friend, Bev) of Madison, SD, Norman (Elvira) Nielsen of Le Mars, IA, Roger Nielsen (special friend, Denice) of Akron, IA, and Loren (Nancy) Nielsen of Akron, IA; 12 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; her son and daughter in law: Jerry and Martha Nielsen; great grandson: John Stanage; a brother: Wesley Mc Corkell; and 7 sisters: Esther Clarey, Alta Mentzer, Sibyl Whitaker, Caryl Siebens, Dorothy Whitaker, Evah Olson, and Jeanne Esterburg.
