Cynthia Rae (DeJong) Athens, 60, of Le Mars, died at her home Friday, December 19, 2014 after a battle with cancer and recent hospitalization.

Services will 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars with Reverend Jan Christensen officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2014 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Cindy Rae Athens was born Dec. 11, 1954, in Hawarden, IA, the daughter of Pierce "Pitts" and Alma (McPherson) DeJong. Cindy graduated from Maurice-Orange City High School in 1973. She worked in Le Mars before marrying and moving to Ames, IA, Minneapolis, MN, Winter Park, FL, Rapid City, SD, and Colorado Springs, CO, before returning to Le Mars. After returning to Le Mars, she began her long career with Well''s Blue Bunny in 1990. Cindy was the recipient of the Presidential Award for Customer Service Excellence. In November 2000, she married Brad Athens of Le Mars. Cindy was a member of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ. Cindy was on the original Noah''s Ark Pre-School Board when the school was established. Cindy loved spending time with her family and her dogs. Her greatest pride and joy was her children, Abby and Ben. She also enjoyed decorating and projects in her home; shopping trips to Chicago; and flower gardening in the summer.

Survivors include her husband, Brad; daughter, Abby Penning; son, Ben Penning; a brother Perry DeJong (Kathy), two sisters, Dona McMasters (Bryan) and Amy Lechtenberg (Joe); her father-in-law, Sonny Athens; step-son, Andru Athens; brothers-in-law Brian (Katy) Athens, Eric (Julie) Athens, and Mike Athens; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pierce and Alma DeJong, and her mother-in-law Ramonda Athens.
