Harold Jelken, 77, of Brunsville, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2010 at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Reverend Mike Schmidt of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville, Iowa will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010, with a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will resume 1 hour prior the services on Friday at the funeral home.
Harold Harm Jelken was born April 14, 1933 on the family farm west of Brunsville, Iowa, the son of Henry and Anka (Kruse) Jelken. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John''s Lutheran Church, Preston Township. He attended country school west of Brunsville. Following his schooling, he went to work for his father on the family farm and began trucking. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Nielsen on November 9, 1952 at St. John''s Lutheran Church, Preston Township. They continued to farm on the family farm west of Brunsville and Harold owned and operated Jelken Trucking. Dorothy passed away February 25, 1991. After retiring from farming, Harold moved to Brunsville. He continued trucking until retiring due to his health. For Harold''s many years of trucking, he was the recipient of the "Farm to Market Pioneer Trucker" award in 1997 from the Iowa Better Trucker''s Bureau. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville, where he held several church offices through the years. He was also a member of the Le Mars Eagle''s Club for many years. He enjoyed bowling, playing pinochle, and in his earlier years, he and Dorothy enjoyed going dancing. Most of all, he enjoyed the times spent visiting with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his two children: Lynn Spink (Cecil) of Kingsley, IA and their children, Jennifer and Jonathan, and Greg Jelken (Mary Kay) of Le Mars, IA and their children, Jason, Kevin, and Tony; three sisters: Florence Jennings of Richfield, MN, Lillian Ludwigs of Le Mars, IA, and Leona Pierce of Pennock, MN; a brother: Dick Jelken (Darla) of Sloan, IA; two sisters in law: Juanita Jelken of Brunsville, IA, and Shirley Jelken of Le Mars, IA; a special friend: Ruth Zembsch; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; four sisters: Amanda Westhoff, Irene Hanson, Clara Krienert, and Mary Ann Meyers; and two brothers: Alvin Jelken and Henry Jelken.
