Early Settler Passes Away

Mrs. Barbara Kemp Came Here in Eighties

Friends in Le Mars were notified this week of the death of Mrs. Barbara Kemp at the home of her son, John Kemp in Mapleton, Iowa. Mrs. Kemp had attained the age of 94 years. She had been in poor health many years suffering from arthritis.

Mrs. Kemp, whose maiden name was Barbara Singer, daughter of Michael and Margaret Singer, was born in Bavaria, Germany, November 19, 1849, and came to the United States when a girl of seventeen, locating at Scales Mound, Illinois. She married John Kemp, April 20, 1871, and eleven years later came with her husband to Le Mars. They lived on a farm south of Le Mars for a few years and then bought a farm north of Remsen, where they lived until 1905 and then retired from farming to live in Remsen where Mr. Kemp died in 1909.

Mrs. Kemp lived in Remsen until 1917, and in the following years lived among her children, and four years ago went to Mapleton to live.

She is survived by five children, Mrs. Joseph Hollenwach of Battle Creek, Mich., Louis Kemp of Spink, S. D., Mrs. Charles Treninen of Remsen, Henry Kemp of Dubuque and John Kemp of Mapleton, Iowa, a brother, Nicholas Singer, of Merrill, eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held this Friday morning at 9:30 in St. Mary's church in Remsen, Rev. A. H. Ocken of Mapleton, will officiate at the services and interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Remsen.
