HOLD RITES FOR ESTEEMED AKRON MAN LAST WEEK

Dan R. Smith Was A Lifelong Resident Of This Community

This community lost one of its most widely known and highly respected citizens in the passing away of Dan Smith last week.

Entering the Akron Community Hospital on December 18, after suffereing a severe hernia attack, his condition seemed to respond to treatment for awhile, but, as time went on, his condition began to slowly decline and on the 15th day of February, 1954, when he had attained the age of 82 years, 4 months, he passed on.

Daniel Robert Smith was born October 15, 1871, four miles north of Akron in Union County, S. D., to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith. He spent his entire life on a farm except when in 1947 a tornado came and took his home. Since then he has made his home in Akron with his ister, Mrs. Amy Agnes.

Always congenial and helpful, he loved little children and was never happier than when entertaining them with games, stories and poems. When reciting these verses, his face would be radiant with smiles and laughter. He gained the high esteem of all with whom he came in contact and will be missed by a host of friends.

Left to mourn his passing are his two brothers, Fred and Jack, near Akron; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Boden, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Daisy Peterson, of Alcester, S. D., and Mrs. Amy Agnes, of Akron, and five nephews and eight nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Andy, U. D. and Henry, and one sister, Lily.

There was a large attendance at the funeral services held last Thursday afternoon in the First Baptist Church. Rev. Dan Peterson conducted the services and paid fine tribute to the life of the departed. Mrs. Virginia Swift was the soloist and her niece, Miss Sandra Tucker, was organist. Pallbearers were Joe Boden, Bernard Beaubien, Wilford and Eldon Smith, Harold and Don Campbell. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
