DEATH OF A PIONEER

MRS. REMBE LIVED ON HOMESTEAD IN PRESTON TOWNSHIP
ILLNESS ONLY A SHORT DURATION

Deceased Was a Native of Germany Where She Grew Up and Was Married--Came With Her Husband to America at an Early Day.

Mrs. Rembe, wife of Geo. Rembe, one of the pioneer women of Plymouth county died at her home, 1321 Madison street, on Friday evening at half past eight, following an illness of a few days. She was taken sick the Sunday previous to her death with bowel trouble and failed to rally, gradually sickening until the end came.

Mrs. Rembe was a native of Germany and was born at Abersheim on January 3, 1846. Her maiden name was Dorothea Yutzie. She grew to womanhood in her native place and was united in marriage there with George Rembe on Christmas day 1867.

The year following their marriage they came to America and shortly after their arrival in this country settled at Warren in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, where they lived for three years. Mr. and Mrs. Rembe came to Plymouth county and homesteaded land in Preston township where they lived until they retired from active life and came to Le Mars to make their home in 1901. They went through all the vicissitudes and hardships that beset the early settlers in northwestern Iowa in the days of scant crops and grasshoppers, but in later years their toil and labor was rewarded when better times came and harvests were plentiful and were happy in their life work and in the rearing of a large family.

Eight children were born to their union. They are Mrs. W. A. Croft, of Seattle, Washington; George and Phil. residing in Preston township; Fred S. Rembe, of Topeka, Indiana; Mamie Rembe, of Seattle; Anna Rembe, Mrs. A. D. Pierson and William Rembe of Le Mars. There are also thirteen grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the First Presbyterian church of which the deceased was a member. Rev. H. V. Comin, the pastor will conduct the services.
Mrs. Rembe was a good Christian woman, highly esteemed in a large circle of friends and old neighbors and her death will be regretted by many in the community where she lived for the past forty-five years.
