Plymouth County Pioneer Passes

Mrs. Rembe Claimed Kin With Royalty

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist church at Hawarden, Rev. R. F. Chapter officiating, for Mrs. Harriett A. Rembe, 82, peioneer of Plymouth county. Interment was made in the family plot in the Le Mars cemetery.

Harriett A. Tooker, daughter of Volney and Helen Tooker, was born at Spring Grove, McHenry county, Ill., February 22, 1859, and passed away in Hawarden May 26, 1941. She came west with her parents when a small girl and they located in Plymouth county near Le Mars. She grew to womanhood there and was united in marriage with George C. Rembe July 4, 1879.

Following her marriage she continured to make her home at Le Mars and later moved to Merrill. In 1893, they located on a farm just south of the Sioux county line in Plymouth county, southeast of Hawarden. Here the family was reared. Her husband passed away December 31, 1917, from monoxide gas while working on his car in a closed garage. Following his death she continued to make her home on the farm together with her son Edward.

She is survived by twn children, George of Lucas, Kan.; Mrs. Emma Barrow of Redlands, Calif.; John and Earl of Sioux City; Charles of Le Mars; Edward and William Rembe, Mrs. Maude Muth, Mrs. Frances Muth and Mrs. Minnie Eilks, all of Hawarden. She also leaves on sister, Mrs. George Striegel of Le Mars.

In the obituary the Hawarden Independent say:

Mrs. Rembe was of English descent and she proudly related to her children how her ancestors came to America on the Mayflower, and how she was sescended from royal blood, being distantly related to Queen Victoria. An incident of her childhood which stood out in her memory was the time she handed a drink of water to Frank James, the otorious criminal, when he traveled through this part of th country.
